It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that one of our founder members Betty Brown, has passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Saturday 4th August, at The Rubens care home in Telford.

It was one of Betty’s wishes to be returned home to Scunthorpe, so the service will be at Woodlands Crematorium Scunthorpe, on Monday 20th August at 2.40pm. Another of Betty’s wishes was for as many group members and friends to attend as possible. She once told me she would love everyone in the group to turn out. So please make every effort to attend. Thank you.

Betty was born in 1925 and attended The Modern School in Scunthorpe. She joined the Civil Service on leaving school and later worked for a while with the Scunthorpe and Grimsby Fire Services. Betty then became a doctor's receptionist for four years. Her only main hobby was of course, driving which she continued to do until two years ago.

She was married to Raymond, a well respected local builder who sadly passed away in 1999.   Betty had a son, David and daughter Pamela.

Betty ( membership no. 99998) enrolled as an associate on 1/8/73 , however her SGAM record, prepared by her, says that she joined in April '75..

She joined the committee in April '77 and was treasurer from June '77 until 1998.                     She ran the Group Shop in the 1980s; was the newsletter distributor from Oct. 1985 until March 1989; and M/C treasurer 1985-87.

Betty’s work knew no bounds as you can see from the list above, but she also took on other jobs, such as if a lone female came into the group she would make a point of introducing herself to them and made them feel welcome, and she always invited them to come and sit with her. She made everyone feel at ease, but in the committee room, if anyone thought they could override her or brow beat her, they were in for a bit of a shock. She was very well respected for her no nonsense approach to things.  A phrase still heard to this day is “Oh I don’t think Betty would have liked that “  We awarded her free life membership in 2012 and she is still a paid up IAM full member.

Betty was loved and admired by us all, and although she hasn’t been around here for a while, there is still and always will be a really big void in our lives where Betty was.    Always valued, always loved, and never forgotten.

Following on from our meeting at the Hilton Hotel at Humberside Airport, the group merger has now been completed. Our new group name is

Scunthorpe & Grimsby Advanced Motorists. The team has been working hard to try and get everything up and running smoothly and in place for us all to continue the work we have always done in promoting advanced driving.

We thank you for your patience throughout all this process and look forward to welcoming you to our social events and publicity days.

We are also in the process of setting up a new website, this should hopefully be completed very soon, so there will not be many more updates on this one. our new website address will be:

Please also check our diary page for details of the next social meeting in August.

Some progress has already been made with the re-branding and re-painting  of the MDU into the new colours and of course the new group name, and it has now had several outings.
