On Thursday 21st April, members and  friends of the Scunthorpe Advanced
Motorists, witnessed a presentation to a rather unique lady. Mrs Betty Brown has
been a member of the organization for 36 years, and is one of the few founder
members left. Betty was right in there at the start of the group, and has played
a pivotal role ever since.  She has spent 34 of those years on the committee
and  her work covered many facets within the running of the group. Ranging from
being treasurer and holding the purse strings ( rather tightly, I might add ) to
newsletter collator / distributor and  group shop controller, and quite often
doing a lot of these jobs at the same time.  All of these tasks had to be
completed before the advent of computers so it really meant a lot of hard work,
and at that time we had almost 300 members too, so you can see this lady has
very often put the group before herself.  As time moved on a motorcycle section
was formed as a sub group of our group and Betty even helped them out by being
their treasurer for about 2 years until they became established. For many years
Betty also made sure that any new members at our social meetings, were welcomed
and introduced to other members, so they wouldn't feel left out.   Betty has
been working on the raffle at the social meetings, and  we are delighted to say
she is not leaving the group but will continue her current job !
Her hard work over many years will never be forgotten. Betty is so
unique, not only in herself, but in the jobs she has done and the fact that she
started from the onset of the group, so no one can ever achieve that. A truly
unique lady in many ways.

Pictured below are the two wonderful ladies who gave us an excellent presentation at our February meeting. Lynne Atkin (right) gave a very informative insight into the work of "Hearing dogs for the Deaf" a registered charity, bit like ourselves run by enthusiastic volunteers. Her friend  on the left Christine Barnett also told us about her life as a deaf person and the great help her little dog Saxon gives to her. There is a lot of hard work and expense to train the animals, and the group relies on volunteers and donations as they do not receive any government funding. Full training costs about £5000 so they need all the help they can get. One of the ways they help to boost their funds is by collecting used postage stamps, so if anyone can help with this or indeed in any other way then please contact Lynne Atkin on 01652 632569, or the head quarters on 01844 348100. Thanks to both ladies and to Saxon, we had a lovely night.
